Super volcanoes are more powerful because the erupt more material. Any volcano that erupts more than 1000 km3 od material in an episode is called a supervolcano. There is a scale of volcanic acivity called the VEI (Volcanic Explosivity Index) that is applied to all eruptions. Super erutions are VEI 8.
