      Dmitri Mendeleev. He put the elements into their order and then used properties about the surrounding ones to work out what the missing ones looked like (this was in 1863 when lots of elements hadn’t been discovered yet)

      I think the ability for the Periodic Table to predict the existence, and behaviour of new elemts that hadn’t been invented was one of the reasons it was adopted relatively quickly.
