The university that I work for is one of the biggest in the UK. I think we have more students than any other. This is great because it means there are lots of different people to work with, but it is also very busy. My work likes us to do a mix of teaching and research so my day to day life can be very different. Sometimes I’m with the students all day and other times I’m locked away in a lab making or analysis materials that I have worked on.

I spend a lot of my time in front of a computer analysing data and then planning the next experiments. The rest of my time I am usually in the lab doing the experiments or reading other peoples work to keep up with what everyone else is doing, or writing up my own results so others can follow me. I also help several students and supervise their work. Most days involve a bit of everything really. I’m designing a new piece of equipment at the moment that wll be able to stirr magma while I watch it in 3D….
