The main difference between eruptions on land and those under the ocea is to do with how the waer interacts with the magma. If the water and magma can mix, as the water becomes steam and expands very fast it can fragment the magma into very fine particles. At depth this doesn’t mean much as the ash has to be ejected into the atmosphere before it can have an climatic impact. However some when the volcano nears the suface of the ocean sometimes it can generate a lot of very fine ash. In general though volcanic induced climate change is becuase because of a combination of ash and SO2.
