      One of the reasons that it is called dark matter is that nobody really knows what it is (and it doesn’t seem to be visible or give off light, so it is dark). Many physicists are spending their time trying to work out what it could be, or to design experiments to see if you could rule anything out. So far no luck though and they keep looking.

      It’s the stuff we know must exists to explain the behaviour of the universe, but that we can’t see or measure directly.
