A black hole is actually infinitely small, so you can’t really have anything inside it. However, there is a region where light can’t escape from known as the event horizon, beyond this point nothing can ever escape, and it would be the bit where it would look black. According to most theories, it wouldn’t actually look very different from the space outside it, but space and time would be switched around (I really don’t know what that would be like though).

This is a bit outside my speciality so I’m not going to add anything to Jos’s answer

I didn’t have anything to add to Jos’ answer, but I found this cool lecture of Stephen Hawkings online
