It doesn’t annoy me but I wish people who were good at science weren’t labeled as geeks. We are positive when someone is good at art or music, why should be being good a science be seen as a bad thing? I think a lot of people are put off subjects by the public image of science, and until recently that’s not necessarily been a good one. What annoys me more is that for a long time engineering science and maths considered subjects for boys. Luckily this has changed a lot recently. Marie Curie discovered x-rays, and before that Mary Anning was one of the most famous fossil finders of her era (that was the only form of geology that really existed back then) I like to think of what they would think about what I do today.
It really annoys me when I meet new people and they find out what I do and they say things like ‘oh you must be really clever’, or ‘can you have a look at my teeth’ . I don’t like the preconceptions that people have of scientist, it’s not that we are really clever or even have a natural apptitude, we just really enjoy what we do so strive to succeed
I agree. I am sure that Marie Curie and Mary Anning would love what your doing today. From the information provided about you and your work and your answers to my previous questions, I think that your work is amazing !
Thanks you very much, but remember, I am nothing special, there are lots of scientists researching all sorts of interesting things and there is no reason you can’t end up doing something just as interesting!
Your welcome and ok. Thank you but I probably won’t be able to get grades high enough for a job as interesting as yours. But I suppose I have just got to keep trying, not give up and believe in myself. Thank you so much for replying to my questions it means a lot!
I was never top of the class…. and I always find it easier to work hard when I know what I’m working hard for. Even with recent difficulties in the economy, a lot of engineers and scientists are still getting good jobs straight out of university. I’m not sure what year you are, but try and find summer jobs and work experience in an area that might help you decide what area of science you want to go into. That always looks good on a CV or personal statement for undergraduate or college courses after school, and for job interviews.
I have just seen this article on the bbc….http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-30121370 which is really annoying me. A scientist found some ash from Alaska in ireland, that DOES NOT mean we’re about to have a “An ash cloud crisis worse than the Icelandic eruption that grounded thousands of flights in 2010 could be imminent” the eruption in question happened in AD 847! This kid of reporting gives us a bad image, or at least stops people listening when we do say something important.
